Two of the best wide receivers in the entire NFL were facing long, difficult drugs bans. Both have pleaded their innocence, but it appeared they would face the consequences of their alleged actions. However, a massive u-turn from the NFL, and a huge piece of luck might help Wes Welker, of the Denver Broncos, and Josh Gordon, of the Cleveland Browns return a lot sooner than expected. The NFL and the Players Association are reviewing their drug policy, and it's believed their suspensions could be reduced to reflect any new rules they decide to implement.
Welker is a veteran, and one who has been relatively trouble-free, yet faces a ban that could be detrminetal to the Brocnos and their season. Gordon, however, has been in the league a short while and has gotton in to trouble upon trouble, making it harder to have any sympathy for him. Welker is always up amongst the best of the receivers when it comes to yards and touchdowns, while Gordon proved last season that he is one of the best receivers in the game, and if trouble-free, could go down as one of the greatest to play the game.
The new policy that has been proposed could see the entire ban overturned, or at least returned, which would be good news for both players, and teams, who had virtually given up any hope of winning this battle. Gordon was suspended for the use of marijuana, while Welker was suspended for using amphetamines. Gordon faces a season-long ban, and Welker faces a four-game ban.
If anything changes with their bans, it's likely that Welker will receiver no ban, or a maximum of a one-game ban, while Gordon could walk away with the maximum of an 8-game ban. Would it be fair for the NFL to alter these bans, or should the original decision stand?
