Michael Sam said he comes from a family of homophobes and that his brothers called him a "faggot" after he came out as the first openly gay football player earlier this year, Sam told Oprah Winfrey, according to TMZ. Sam spoke with Oprah for a documentary that aired Saturday, Dec. 27, in which the former St. Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys practice player detailed how difficult it was for him to be accepted even in his own home. "They called me a lot of things," Sam said, according to TMZ. "They called me a f-g. They called me 'gay.' They called me anything you could think of — just to hurt me." During the interview, Sam changed his stance on whether he thinks his sexuality cost him a spot in the NFL. Sam was released by the Rams and the Cowboys, never appearing in a game. San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner earned World Series MVP honors after allowing one earned run in 21 Fall Classic innings, an accomplishment that sparked another prestigious honor Monday, Dec. 8. On Monday, Bumgarner was named "Sports Illustrated's" Sportsman of the Year for his efforts, beating out a crowded field of candidates that included Michael Sam and Kansas City Royals fans. Sam came out as the first publicly gay football player in February. And Bumgarner was the only thing standing between Royals fans enjoying a World Series title they had been waiting 29 years for. Michael Sam -- the first openly gay player to be drafted to the NFL -- has refuted claims and "headlines" saying that the defensive linesman is being kept out of the NFL because of his sexuality. After being drafted in the seventh round by the St Louis Rams in this year's NFL draft, Sam was dropped by the Rams and then by Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys, but he says that he is looking forward to a chance to prove he belongs in the NFL. The Cleveland Browns will welcome the Indianapolis Colts to town, but one man comes back knowing that the last time he left it wasn't willingly. Trent Richardson was supposed to be the superstar RB the Browns needed, but it's safe to say he didn't hit the ground running, leaving many people unimpressed. However, a little over a year ago the NFL was in shock when he was traded to the Colts, for a first-round draft pick (later used to get Justin Gilbert and Johnny Manziel). The NFL's first openly gay player, Michael Sam, has revealed why thinks he was cut from the St. Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys and is no longer on an NFL team ... and it has nothing to do with his talent. The defensive player, who came out before this year's NFL draft — told reporters that he still believes he has a future in football, and that the reason he's not in the league may have to do with his sexuality and about the bogus "Michael Sam distraction" rather than his talent as a footballer. When asked by TMZ why he's not currently on an NFL team, despite being drafted by the St. Louis Rams and then picked up by the Dallas Cowboys after being placed on waivers by the Rams, "I was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year last year, I don't think it had to do with talent." Even though Sam was a college star, the fact that Sam is gay caused many in football to wonder how it would affect his draft stock and his eventual acceptance into the NFL, with the "(New York) Daily News" even saying "most NFL experts blamed his size — and not the fact that he was gay" for his draft-day drop. The Cleveland Browns are enjoying one of their best NFL seasons since their 1999 return, but that doesn't mean everything is perfect, particularly in the mind of their management. Jordan Cameron, Johnny Manziel and Josh Gordon were tipped to be the stars that led the Browns to astonishing things this season, but strangely, they've done just that, astonish the NFL, but without the help of this trio. The Browns will face the Buffalo Bills this weekend, and whether they win or lose, they could well trade these three stars, but for very different reasons. Josh Gordon is back, the real (starter) Isaiah Crowell and Brian Hoyer are ready to rumble and they've just — perhaps luckily — beaten the Atlanta Falcons with a last-second field goal. Gordon has served his 10-game ban and he started the game well, and finished well, proving he had no "rust" from his long suspension. Crowell is now the No. 1 running back and Hoyer is still the quarterback and will remain so while he finds ways to win. It might not have been their best performance, but the Browns's boys have won again, and many are comparing them to the Super Bowl-winning New York Giants in recent memory. But can Cleveland go that far? Crowell is their new secret weapon. He never expected the NFL life to come so easy this season, but now Ben Tate is gone and he's the main man. This all fell in to the week where he was visiting Atlanta, where most of his family is based. Could he impress? Joe Haden loves two things: sneakers and stopping wide receivers. So perhaps one should take note when he speaks about either of these things. Firstly, he's announced that on Black Friday he will open a sneaker store. The defensive star is a huge fan of his shoes, having a different pair for almost any occasion, however, opening his store is certainly showing his love for sneakers is greater than we imagined. On top of that, he believes he can be better than Richard Sherman, and that his fellow teammate, WR Josh Gordon, will be back with a bang this weekend.
