What do rides, scandal and possible incest have in common? They all exist at theme parks ... yep, you read that right, theme parks. MTV's new dramatic comedy Happyland revolves around the inner workings of a theme park and what people don't see as visitors. The newest trailer of the upcoming show is hilarious and over-the-top, but what else would you expect when visiting a place called Happyland?
The trailer begins with Lucy (Bianca Santos) working at a theme park searching for a giant raccoon in a cowboy hat. When she does find the fluffy character, he is stoned, which causes problems for the rule-following employee.
According to The Wrap, "The network's upcoming teen dramedy centers around a theme park worker named Lucy who falls for the boss' son, who may or may not be her brother."
The clip continues to show Lucy, yelling at the newest employee, Ian (Shane Harper) but she quickly bites her tongue when he shows off his killer abs. The two share a kiss and what looks like a whirlwind romance. So, what's the problem? He's the boss's son.
If that isn't enough of an issue, Lucy learns that Ian might also be her brother! Lucy and her mother (Camille Guaty) have always been on their own, but as the clip shows, her father might actually be her boss and her fling's dad. Hello scandal!
In July, the series creator Ben Epstein insisted that the show would not be solely about the family issues. "I don't think that any audience who's going to watch it is going to see the show and say, 'Oh, this is a show about incest.' It's not. It's a very small aspect of the show that does serve for some comedic incentive," he explained at the Television Critics Association panel.
According to MTV, the show is about discovering if happy endings really exist. "The series centers on Lucy, the cynical teenage daughter of idealistic park princess mom, Elena. Having grown up in a world of manufactured happiness her whole life, Lucy wants to get out and experience something real," the network explained.
Happyland premieres Sept. 30 on MTV. Tune in to see what really happens at the happiest places on earth.
