Awkward star Nikki Deloach became a mother in 2013 and now she's opening up to BC magazine about what it's like to be a mother and why she would never be like her character Lacey Hamilton.
In season one of Awkward, Jenna Hamilton (played by Ashley Rickards) went into a downward spiral after discovering a "Carefrontation" letter written by a mysterious person belittling Jenna. The letter said, "As you are now, you could disappear and no one would notice." The entire season revolved around this letter that hurt Jenna and in the season finale it was clear that it was written by her own mother, Lacey.
Now that the 35-year-old actress is a mother herself, she admits that her character's actions are something she would never do. "Here's the thing about motherhood: I think there are things you think you'll never do, and there are things you think you always do. I've learned to never say never, and never say always. Except with Hudson, because I will always love him, but I think that the reason that Lacey and her relationship with Jenna is so compelling is because it's so universal," Nikki told BC in her cover shoot interview.
"We heighten the situation because it's comedy and it's TV, but every mother knows what it feels like to do something with the best of intentions and have it go horribly awry, interpreted by your child in such a different way than what you thought it would be. I would like to think that by the time Hudson is a freshman in high school and he's going through something like this, I will be really quick to handle it, instead of giving him a confrontation. I'm sure that I will muck it up some other way, and I'll have to ask for forgiveness."
The Mickey Mouse Club alum also revealed that she is still friends with fellow Mouseketeer Justin Timberlake. "Justin and I, from day one, we hit it off as friends and he's a great guy. Let's talk about how amazingly talented he is — he's a genius. But in terms of as a person, I loved his whole family," she explained in the publication.
"Actually, his mother wanted to put together a girl group when Justin was in 'NSYNC, so we kinda put our heads together and ended up with five girls. She was like a second mom to me for a really long time — still is. She'll still tell me you know — pardon my language — if my sh-t stinks. Or if I need to get it together, if I'm doing a really good job, and she's proud of me. I appreciate that," she added.
Nikki married Ryan Goodell in 2009 and they have one child together, Hudson (whose full name is William Hudson). "Your love grows bigger and bigger, and I didn't even realize I had the capacity to love something so much. I can only imagine how much bigger that's going to get when I see his little face," Nikki told Us Weekly before giving birth to her baby boy.
