Fans are elated as Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan sit down in a rare joint interview with The Hollywood Reporter to chat about when they first met, his past addiction and their current film project, The Judge.
Sherlock Holmes director, Guy Ritchie, calls the marriage between Downey and Susan as "perfectly symbiotic."
The couple met in 2003 on the set of the Halle Berry-led thriller Gothika. This was Susan's first big full-credit producing job. Since this was a high-stakes job for her she didn't want to mix romance with work. Robert asked Susan out about three times before she said yes. She thought he was an oddball!
She goes in to detailed examples of just how "oddball-ish" he was when she first me him.
"Everybody else ordered Japanese, but Robert told us how oatmeal was the 'superfood.' He brought his own packets of oatmeal to have at lunch. And he had this box of various herbs and stuff. And then he started doing these yoga moves. I mean, he was interesting but weird."
The couple was farthest from alike, a term that suits them better would be: opposites attract.
Susan Levin was an honor student who grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. Her father was a businessman and her mother was on the PTA. She graduated summa cum laude from USC.
Unlike Levin, Downey was a high school dropout, had a director father who gave him his start in Hollywood at age 5 as well as his first joint at age 8. While Downey had a drug problem, Susan had barely even puffed on a cigarette.
"Addiction was so foreign to me," Susan said. "I was incredibly ignorant of the hold it had on people."
That is the main thing that Robert loves about his wife... she isn't like him. She is actually the one that saved him. Without her, they wouldn't be sitting today together.
But how does the busy couple keep their romance alive? They have a two-week rule where they can't spend more than a fortnight apart, even if they are separated by miles.
Collaborating on The Judge together was in some ways an unlikely pick for the two. It's a serious drama directed by David Dobkin. "We thought it would be exciting to develop the sort of movie we grew up loving," says Susan. "These incredible character-driven dramas that have something a bit more commercial to them..."
Susan is now six-month pregnant with their second child together. Their first child is 2-year-old Exton.
