CW's period piece Reign returns tomorrow and there are more things to be afraid of than the plague. In season one, Francis (played by Toby Regbo) not only killed his father, but he left his queen Mary (played by Adelaide Kane) to find the mother of his child Lola (played by Anna Popplewell). When Reign returns for its sophomore season there is even more drama and it is coming in full force.
1. The plague is just the beginning.
During a recent screening of the season two premiere of Reign, the show's creators explained that in addition to death, the plague will be the backdrop for more drama and problems for everyone in France. "I wanted to do the plague as something other than 'who's going to die and who's going to live.' I wanted it to be a launching pad for the framework of the environment that we're going to be living in for the next year," executive producer Laurie McCarthy told journalists at the screening via The Wrap.
2. Mary will not sleep with Bash
In season one, Mary had an attraction and chemistry with Bash (played by Torrance Coombs), the older brother of her husband Francis. During this summer's comic-con panel, McCarthy said she was happy squashing the love triangle between Bash, Mary and Francis. "I do like it when two people move on. And Mary and Francis were wed," Laurie explained.
There will, however, still be that friendship and chemistry between Mary and Bash next season. "They'll always have a special relationship. I just don't think they'll bang," she added.
3. Francis's love child will not sit well with Mary
After her best friend Lola betrayed her last season and slept with Francis (granted, she was engaged to Bash at the time), Mary is not going to have an easy time dealing with her now-husband's love child. "Mary's always trying to be the bigger person," Adelaide said about her character at the season two screening.
"Trying to push past it and do what's right for everyone. I think as the season progresses, having the child around becomes more and more of an unspoken pressure for Mary as she fails to conceive ... The longer she goes without having a child, the more that's going to weigh on her and become a divisive factor in her relationship with Francis."
4. Mary will get a taste of what it's like to rule France
When Francis' father died, Mary and Francis took over as the king and queen of France. Even though they are young, the duo has always been ready to lead and this season we will finally see that. "I think they've been preparing to step into power their whole lives," Adelaide told Zap2it in May.
"I don't think anyone's really ever prepared for that. It's like moving out for the first time, or going to college for the first time. You think you're ready but nobody's ever really ready." With Francis out searching for his child and Lola, Mary must step up as the leader, which her mother-in-law Catherine doesn't like.
Tune in Thursday, October 2 for the season two premiere of Reign.
