‘The Middle’ Recap: “Major Anxiety” Reveals Axl’s Major Problem And Brick’s First Date

This week's episode of The Middle revolves around the youngest member of the Heck family... Brick. As he tries to become more popular, the rest of the family deals with their own issues.

"Major Anxiety" begins with Brick having a sit down with his parents to tell them that he wants to be popular. He needs advice on how to do it, which is adorable. Meanwhile, Sue is hopped up on coffee, because all the cool kids are drinking it.

At college, Axl realizes that he needs to pick a major by the end of the week and he begins to panic. His first thought, a Buddhist studies major, because it involves retreats. After coming home to dry his clothes, not wash them because Frankie said he couldn't wash his clothes there anymore, his parents tell him he cannot choose that major.

Brick then turns to Axl for popularity tips and Axl is flattered. He tells him to try and go for the bottom feeders, who are below Sue on the popularity ladder. Sue tries to help Brick, but she can't sit still long enough to give good advice. Frankie then comes up with an idea to have a talk show on their couch to help Brick practice making friends.

During their couch show, Axl and Daren stop by to "get exposure for the band" and Sue gets a cup of coffee before joining in on the fun. Brick reveals that he is going to go to the fall dance alone to make friends there. Frankie and Mike don't like the idea, but they support him. Before they take him to the dance Frankie teaches him how to dance with girls and it is precious.

After dropping Brick off at the school, they wait in the parking lot in case he needs them. Brick eventually enters the dance after doing the robot outside and starring at street signs. The moment Frankie and Mike return home they get a text telling them to come back and get him. He then texts them that he is actually fine, but they stay in the lot just in case. When he finally comes out of the dance he is missing a shoe.

Meanwhile, Sue convinces Axl to take a girl's personality test to figure out what his major should be. He gets a "social sally," meaning he should be a handbag designer to the celebrities, which is hilarious. Axl then leaves to the roof where Sue finds him and they have a heart-to-heart. She reveals that she wants to be a psychology major and Axl jumps on that bandwagon and says he too will be that major.

Sue threatens to go to the same school as Axl if he steals her major. She starts to run down the roof and slips and falls. As she is hanging there, they have a typical brother-sister fight.

Frankie and Mike drive up just in time to save Sue from falling and tell Axl that he will major in business. The next day a girl knocks on the door and gives Brick back his shoe. They go on an ice cream date after Brick slams the door on her face, he really doesn't understand social cues. While on his date he texts his parents to save him and then says never mind he is having a great time. Oh, Brick.
