Robert Downey Jr. is taking a trip down memory lane and it's heading right towards Sarah Jessica Parker. The acting powerhouses dated in the '80s after meeting in 1984, and now Robert is asking Sarah's husband Matthew Broderick if he can reconnect with his former flame. Spoiler: Matthew is totally okay with it.
Matthew and Sarah Jessica have been married since 1997 and they have three children together. Downey Jr., on the other hand, has been married to Susan Downey since 2005 and they have one child together with one on the way. In an interview on The Howard Stern Show, the actor star revealed what it was like dating the Sex and the City actress.
"I've never been the kind of person to acknowledge what's going on with me at the time, and I'd try to make light of it, but sure, when you're with someone for seven years, 18 to our mid-20s, it's kind of a big deal," The Judge star admitted to Howard Stern.
In 2008 the Iron Man actor explained a little more about his relationship with SJP, admitting that he put her through a lot at the time. "I was so selfish. I liked to drink, and I had a drug problem, and that didn't jibe with Sarah Jessica, because it is the furthest thing from what she is. She provided me a home and understanding. She tried to help me. She was so miffed when I didn't get my act together," he told Parade via Huffington Post.
"I thought my way was so much cooler than people who were actually building lives and careers. I was in love with Sarah Jessica, and love clearly was not enough. I was meant to move on. And, after some heartache, she was meant to find her home with a great star," he added.
After a seven year relationship the duo split in 1991. More than 20 years later, Robert wants to catch up with his former girlfriend and reconnect now that they are both happy and healthy.
"I'll make a point of trying to see her while I'm here. I'd like to. I'll ask his [Matthew] permission. I just want to check in for a few minutes. I love Matthew Broderick," Robert revealed in his Howard Stern interview.
"First of all, I respect both of them so much, and now we have to get past this conversation. For any situation like this, I think enough time has to pass. You don't have to make a big deal of it when the time is right," he added.
So what did Matthew think of Robert's interest in seeing Sarah again? He is completely okay with it. "Of course, he's more than [okay to connect her] –– they're great friends! What would I say? No? Who do you think I am? No, I love Robert Downey and Sarah Jessica Parker so [yes!]" Matthew exclusively told Us Weekly at the opening night for his Broadway play, It's Only a Play.
Sarah is also happy to catch up with Robert saying, "He and I have always been on wonderful terms so, of course I'm hospitable to that!"
