It looks like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star/writer/creator Rob McElhenney is making the move to the big screen! Deadline reports that the actor will direct the Legendary Pictures film Figment. Adding to that, "Mac" will also write the script and produce the film, which is surprisingly not anything like It's Always Sunny. That's right, the upcoming film will be a "family action adventure."
Figment is reported to be about a young boy and his family "who are thrown for a loop when their greatest fears come to life."
McElhenney apparently nabbed the film by presenting Legendary Pictures with a four-minute test reel alongside a 20-minute pitch. And given he hasn't really directed a feature film before, the land comes as rather surprising. Of course, seeing as what he and his crew over at It's Always Sunny have done with the once-upon-a-time "little" show, perhaps it's not a total surprise.
Apparently, after hearing the pitch, the production company was in deep instantly. Deadline notes that the hope for the film is to equal the themes brought about by classics such as The Goonies or E.T.
The husband to fellow It's Always Sunny star Kaitlin Olson is obviously stoked about the news, tweeting out:
“@DeadlineMike: How Rob McElhenney Earned Legendary Movie Helming Debut On ‘#Figment’ https://t.co/iabQXH3omq” Could not be more excited.

Alongside McElhenney, 3 Arts' Nicholas Frenkel will produce the film.
Fans of the actor's FX series are currently awaiting its return, which will begin in Jan. 2015, and serve as the show's tenth season.
