‘The Goldbergs’ Recap: “Shall We Play A Game?” Reveals A Drunk Beverly Goldberg

The Goldbergs returned tonight with an all-new episode and it was a funny one. "Shall We Play A Game?" is all about the cool factor and Beverly Goldberg doesn't have it.

This week's episode begins with Adam talking about how uncool his mother was growing up. In addition to wearing fanny backs and giant hats and enforcing dumb rules, Beverly made picture shirts and wore her family's faces on her shirt in public!

As Beverly is getting her new family-face shirt at the mall, she runs into Erica and her friends. She is shocked when she finds out that Jill's mom gets to hangout with the girls, because she is super cool. When she goes home she tells Murray all about it, but Murray agrees that Jill's mom Louise is really cool.

While Beverly tries to become cool, Barry creates a "cool" crew of his own called JTP. All Adam wants is to be a part of his big brother's crew, who claim they talk to girls and will one day steal the Germantown mascot. After Barry's friends see WarGames, they think that computer geeks might actually be cool.

Adam tells Barry he will hack into the school's computers and change his grades if he can be a part of JTP. Sadly, he cannot hack on his 1980-something computer, so he fakes it. He tricks the guys into studying, so they get really good grades on their tests and think it is because he hacked the system and changed their grades. Luckily, Barry's friends aren't too sharp and it works.

Unfortunately, Adam quickly discovers that JTP is actually pretty lame. All they do is hangout in a parking lot and avoid girls. The next day the group of friends need Adam's help to "hack" again, but after Barry ruins Adam's computer game he tells them the truth and gets Barry kicked out of his own group.

Back to Beverly, she wants so badly to fit in with Erica that she comes downstairs dressed like Madonna and starts to dance in front of all of her friends. It is totally embarrassing. Erica lies and says they will hangout at the dermatologist's office and when Beverly is crushed, Murray steps in. He tells her to spend time with her mom or all of her fun activities will no longer be allowed.

Erica goes to get fondue with her mom but has her friends come too to get her out of the rest of their mother-daughter date. Beverly isn't stupid, so she figures it out and gets really upset. Beverly storms out, ditching Erica, and finds herself at the bar with her dad, who solves her cool problem by telling her to drink.

When Beverly comes home drunk, Erica is up waiting for her and quickly becomes the mom in the situation. She ends up staying up all night with her mom and takes care of her in her drunken state. The next morning she protects her mom from the boys and then has a heart-to-heart with her. They bond and Erica tells her she is cool for taking such good care of her and her brothers every day.

Back to Barry, Adam tries to apologize for getting him kicked out of JTP, but he is still really mad. Adam decides to help him steal the Germantown mascot... a falcon to get back into the group's good graces. They team up and even use Adam's computer to create a fake hall pass and pull it off. When he walks up to their school they all praise him for getting the real-life falcon, and he gives half the credit to his JTP friends.

Adam and Barry bond throughout the process and it is adorable. They even hangout by themselves, ruining their mom's new toaster at the end of the episode.
