4 years after the events of Part Three, we come back to Olive's life, now mostly consisting of her husband Henry after his stroke. Leaving Henry, Olive flies to New York to visit her son, Christopher, who is remarried and has a child on the way. This news is a little bittersweet for viewers, considering Henry probably won't have the chance to meet his grandchild.
Olive's relationship with Christopher seems to be much better, with the son showing more respect for his mother now that he has two kids from his new wife, Ann (Audrey Marie Anderson) and one of his own on the way.
It's an emotional visit, to say the least. Olive calls Henry each night on her weeklong visit, at one point crying over the phone because she spilled food on her clothes without anyone telling her. Olive and Christopher have another fight, revealing that her affair with Jim O'Casey wasn't physical and further revelations that she's not such a great mother. This leads to Olive leaving on bad terms with her son.
Arriving home, Olive immediately showers and picks out flowers for Henry's room. While Olive was gone, Henry passed away in his sleep while she was on the phone with him. Jumping ahead 6 months later, we find Olive staring at her driveway as is Henry would pull up at any minute.
Clancy, also showing his age, and Olive go for a walk and happen upon Jack Kennison (Bill Murray) laying on the ground by a bench. He's able to talk, so she manages to get him up and introduces herself. We find out his wife had died and that they're both very depressed. You can watch this scene in a clip right here:
Olive and Jack strike up a bit of a friendship, if anything just to keep busy. They go out on a dinner date and talk about losing their spouses. Soon, the conversation focuses more on their children, revealing that Jack's daughter is gay. He's a bit bigoted, but points out that Olive is just as intolerant as him. She storms out, leaving him with one piece of advice: "Don't kill yourself."
Coming home, Olive finds Clancy very sick. Ann also calls to tell her that she is a grandmother and that Christopher doesn't know she's calling. After putting sweet ol' Clancy to sleep (thus setting in motion the best quote of the series: "I'm just waiting for the dog to die so I can shoot myself), Olive puts postage on envelopes addressed to her son and Denise. Then the opening scene from Part One, where Olive walks with her bag through the woods to a certain spot, plays out.
Placing her suicide note down next to her, some children happen upon the scene, causing her to reconsider her plan. She weeps.
Olive visits Jack at his home, bringing him her tulips. They exchange sob stories, relating to one another even more than before. Olive lies next to her new friend, clutching his hand at first, and then lays her head on his chest.
"It baffles me, this world," Olive states just before the credits roll. "I don't want to leave it yet."
