'The Vampire Diaries' EP Talks Damon And Elena's Kiss In The Rain, Plus Will Caroline And Stefan Ever Date?

Fans are still reeling from last week's flashback rain kiss between Damon and Elena in The Vampire Diaries. Now the show's executive producer is opening up about what sparked the romantic moment and why she chose to include it now. Plus, unlock a serious spoiler about Caroline and Stefan's romantic future.

The series' creator Julie Plec revealed that the iconic kiss originated in season one when Damon and Elena had to team up to save Stefan and their chemistry was instantly recognizable to fans. After Twitter comments about the potential for an onscreen kiss in the rain between these two characters, the show's writers also started to entertain the idea of the wet kiss.

This season presented the perfect moment for this hyped up kiss when Damon needed to remind Elena about their love for one another with a moment that meant something to both of them.

"We were writing the story and we were thinking, 'OK, what could that memory be?' We've always wanted to say, 'What was that summer that we skipped between Season 4 and 5 where they had the summer of their lives? What did they do? There's got to be something awesome that they did," Julie told TV Line.

"'So we were like, 'OK, is it a meteor shower? Are they out by a waterfall? We were just pitching all these ideas, and all of a sudden, someone – I don't even know who it was, maybe it was me, maybe it was somebody else – said, 'What if they kissed in the rain?' And we all went, 'Oh, God!'"

The rain kiss was the perfect and simplest way to convey the fact that they were truly in love and trigger Elena's memory of their romantic rollercoaster. "It was going to be something beautiful and epic, so the rain was a way of us [honoring] this group of fans who spent five years begging for this one thing. ... I think it's because of The Notebook ... oh, and Spider-Man," she explained to the publication.

"Basically, there's something about people coming together in the rain that's the ultimate expression of love in the minds of most audiences."

Now that fans have seen the long awaited for rain kiss between one of the series' most central couples, we are switching our focus to Caroline and Stefan. Will they ever be more than just friends? In a sneak peek at this week's episode, Damon and Alaric finally tell Stefan that he should be dating Caroline!

According to TV Guide, while the men are all together they give Stefan a list of reasons why he and Caroline should date already. "Why don't you just date her and put us all out of our misery?" Damon says in the exclusive clip via TV Guide.

Despite the fact that Stefan doesn't see her as a girlfriend type, the boys don't take no for an answer. "One, she's hot objectively," Damon says. "Two, she puts up with you," Alaric adds. "Three, she's very, very well organized," Damon reveals.
