HBO have finally confirmed some of the final big names for True Detective Season 2, with Mean Girls star Rachel McAdams and Friday Night Lights hunk Taylor Kitsch officially joining the cast of the riveting break out drama hit of 2014. Kelly Reilly was also announced, and the three will join lead superstars Vince Vaughan and Colin Farrell.
It caps a very busy period for McAdams, who in addition to the second season of True Detective is slated to be in five movies in 2015, including Southpaw, Spotlight, The Little Prince, Everything Will Be Fine, as well as a Cameron Crowe movie still in the works. Reilly also appeared in the Robert Downey Jr/Jude Law-led Sherlock Holmes series with McAdams, with a third installment in that franchise also on the cards.
Kitsch, meanwhile, hasn't quite been the breakout star many predicted after his turn as the surly, loveable Tim Riggins in Friday Night Lights. But after a commercial misfire with John Carter and again with director (and FNL honcho) Peter Berg in Battleship, Kitsch and Berg once more delivered with the terrific Lone Survivor (and in the new commerical for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare starring Kitsch and directed by Berg).
HBO also delivered character descriptions - as reported by EW.com - for the casting announcement, saying:
Taylor Kitsch will be "Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle officer for the California Highway Patrol, running from a difficult past and the sudden glare of a scandal that never happened."
Rachel McAdams plays "Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff's detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with others and the system she serves."
Reilly will play Jordan Semyon, "Frank Semyon's (Vaughan) wife, a former D-list actress who is a full partner in his enterprises and ambitions."
They join Farrell playing "compromised detective" Ray Velcoro and Vaughan as criminal/entrepreneur Semyon.
As Hitfix report, shooting for the second season of True Detective has already kicked off, with Hitfix's Josh Lasser saying that "the eight episode season has begun production in California, with Justin Lin directing the first two episodes".
What do you think we can expect of True Detective's second season? Can it reach the heights of the Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey first season? Will Vaughan and Farrell be able to conjure the same sort of chemistry that made the first True Detective so special?
