The war between Washington coach Jay Gruden and his star quarterback Robert Griffin III is continuing even after the team's strong showing on Sunday to the San Francisco 49ers. Despite losing 17-13, RG3-led Washington to within a whisker of beating the 49ers, with a Carlos Hyde rushing touchdown with 2.39 left in the fourth quarter winning it for San Fran.
As Deadspin point out, Griffin "didn't do anything particularly well" but, as they argue, "he didn't do anything egregious enough to warrant being benched for Colt McCoy".
But that didn't stop his coach from stopping short of ensuring the position of his starting QB against the Indianapolis Colts and the man who was taken one spot ahead of RG3 in the 2012 NFL draft, and who the QB will always be measured against, Andrew Luck.
"It's Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock," Gruden told The Washington Post, "and right now we have every intent for Robert [to start], but we'll look at the tape and make our evaluations here shortly".
Then, during Gruden's weekly spot on CSN, The Washington Post report the coach as saying "Well, we want to beat Indianapolis. We want to win every game. And I have to put the people in there who [are] gonna help us win those games. And we're gonna seriously go down and look at this film, look at last week's film, look at Minnesota's film, look at Houston's film, and try to put a plan together that will help him succeed."
"Or we'll have to find out if somebody else is there that can help us beat Indianapolis instead."
Yikes. That certainly doesn't sound promising for Griffin, who Gruden doesn't seem to trust at all, with the QB competing 11 of only 19 throwing attempts in the 49ers game, going for 106 yards. It certainly seems as if there's a big disconnect between the coach and his player, and it's weighted in the coach's favor at the moment.
"We're evaluating all of our guys right now," USA Today also reported Gruden as saying after the 49ers loss, pointing out that his "starting lineup is not etched in stone right now." He went on to say that the team will "evaluate everybody today and tomorrow and have a plan moving forward, starting Wednesday."
In the USA Today piece Gruden pointed to the team's lack of offensive production with RG3 under center as the main problem, saying "we scored 20 points in the last eight quarters, been poor on third down, and we can't attribute it all to Robert."
He then added, "He is the quarterback, though, so we have to look at every avenue and figure out where we can improve."
ESPN's Skip Bayless provided his take, tweeting out:
Just a guess: Jay Gruden would prefer to go with Colt McCoy over RG3 but not sure the owner will sign off on it.

On Sunday Deadspin revealed Washington "owner Dan Snyder and GM/President Bruce Allen have given coach Jay Gruden the permission and the autonomy to sit Robert Griffin III if the quarterback continues to struggle", marking a huge change for the front office who have been among the strongest backers of Griffin, given what they sacrificed to draft the QB.
What do you think? Should RG3 be starting? Do Washington have a better chance against Indianapolis with him or Colt McCoy at QB?
