Jeremy Irons portrays Bruce Wayne's butler, Alfred Pennyworth, in Zack Snyder's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. The actor recently teased his role in the movie and explained how Alfred fits into this world.
Irons received an honor at an international film festival recently, and the actor touched briefly on his role in Dawn of Justice. "He is quite a different Alfred than we have seen so far," the actor said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Zack Snyder had very clear views about what he wanted. I would just say he's more hands-on perhaps than just a butler." Irons added that his part in the film is "not a large role."
This portrayal would seem to be in contrast to Michael Caine's work in Christopher Nolan's trilogy. In those movies, Alfred never really got physical with anyone, but he did provide sage wisdom and guidance for Bruce Wayne throughout the three movies.
But other incarnations of Alfred have done more than serve dinner and tend to the house. In Batman: Earth One, Alfred is a former soldier in the Royal Marines, is proficient in hand-to-hand combat, and is a trained marksman. In this iteration, Bruce receives much of his training from Alfred.
And on the new TV series Gotham, Alfred is more than capable of holding his own in a fight, as he has worked alongside detectives Harvey Bullock and Jim Gordon. He's even training a young Bruce Wayne to fight.
