In our title, we mentioned two of Weitz's big directorial projects, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and American Pie. Fans of Star Wars might be cringing at those titles, but we should also point out that he also directed The Golden Compass. Plus, according to Slash Film, his writing credits include 2015's Cinderella and Academy Award nomination for About A Boy.
The Hollywood Reporter broke this news, also pointing out that he's currently authoring his own YA novel franchise. The first novel in the series is entitled The Young World. You can read more about this news right here!
With his writing background, we could expect some sort of romantic storyline playing a big role in this 2016 film. We might want to get ready for Weitz to get a director's chair for another spin-off film, too, joining Edwards and Josh Trank as another helmer of the standalone movies.
The latest news about this upcoming project includes some plot details that could involve Han Solo and Boba Fett as central characters, and actresses Tatiana Maslany, Felicity Jones, Rooney Mara, and Kate Mara auditioning for the same role in the movie.
