Super Bowl 49 pit the Seattle Seahawks against the New England Patriots, but as is often the case with the big game, the halftime show was just as interesting and entertaining as the sporting event itself. This year's performer was Katy Perry, the energetic and colorful pop star with dozens of hit singles.

Perry performed several of those hits during the halftime show on Sunday, but she was not alone. Lenny Kravitz joined Perry on stage, as did Missy Elliott, who was featured on a remix of Perry's hit single "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" in 2011.

Perry teased to E! Online on Thursday that another female performer would join her on stage. "This is true. I have to keep some surprises for Sunday and I'm very, very excited about this guest because I thought long and hard about it and wanted to kinda bring someone back, like a throwback of sorts, that definitely needed some more shine," Perry said. "All I can say is it will be a real female-fun night."

"It's a bit old school," Perry continued. "But I think when this person enters the stage and you hear the first ring of the chord, I think jaws will drop and faces will melt. There will be faces melting when she steps on the stage."

E! Online subsewuently confirmed that Missy Elliott was the performer in question. Fans took to Twitter starting on Friday to express their excitement about the singer's appearance during Perry's halftime show.
