While Twitter was set up as a an easy social media outlet and a way to relay news updates in a simplified way, these days it's really just a source for abuse. Sure, it doesn't happen all of the time, but racism, sexism and general bullying is rampant on the 140-character communication website. In a recent internal forum post discovered and published by The Verge, the company's CEO, Dick Costolo, admitted that the social media website, as a company, doesn't handle abuse on the website well. In fact, he straight up said, "We suck at dealing with abuse." Find out more about this story below!
"We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform and we've sucked at it for years," Costolo wrote on the forum in response to a colleague asking if the company could handle abuse on the website any better. "It's no secret and the rest of the world talks about it every day. We lose core user after core user by not addressing simple trolling issues that they face every day."
He continued: "I'm frankly ashamed of how poorly we've dealt with this issue during my tenure as CEO. It's absurd. There's no excuse for it. I take full responsibility for not being more aggressive on this front. It's nobody else's fault but mine, and it's embarrassing. We're going to start kicking these people off right and left and making sure that when they issue their ridiculous attacks, nobody hears them. Everybody on the leadership team knows this is vital."
It seems like we can't go a day or so without seeing some sort of story about Twitter abuse and/or bullying that leads to some terrible consequences. At least the company is aware of the problem and Costolo is claiming responsibility outright.
