MStars News has learned that a Tyler, Texas, college football star is the lead suspect in the murder of his girlfriend after finding out she was really born a man. According to HLNTV, Carlton Ray Champion Jr., 21, started talking to his girlfriend, whose real name is Tyrone Lee Underwood, 24, through a mobile app and thought Underwood was a girl.

In a written statement, the police claim the two got into an argument about the football star seeing someone else as Tyrone, who went by name Tyra, old Champion that she didn't want to be with him anymore.

Champion said he was going to try to make things up with Tyra, as both of them met up later on the night of Jan. 25.

In the early morning of Jan. 26, Tyler police discovered the body of Tyrone in a car after neighbors claimed they heard a number of gunshots.

Champion's whereabouts were discovered on campus video surveillance and proved that he was out around the time the murder occurred, showing him returning 15 minutes later.

Investigators think the murder happened within that timeframe. Champion claimed he was in his dorm room at the time, but the video showed otherwise.

When the Texas football player's jacket was tested for blood, the police statement revealed it was positive, proving he was the main suspect.

Champion's father tried to defend his son and told police he was going to meet the murder victim for sexual activity, but found out that Tyra was transgender. Champion's father said he was going for “some type of sexual favor from the victim, but realized the victim was a male."

But a detective revealed that Champion may have already knew Tyra was a man. “After reading the texts between Champion and Underwood, it was clear that the two have had sexual relations with each other,” a detective added to the written report.

According to Yahoo Sports, Champion has been charged with first-degree murder and is currently behind bars at the Smith County jail on $1 million bond.
