On Tuesday, March 17, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata made a vague announcement during media day that has caused a stir in the gaming community. According to Iwata, next year Nintendo will let the public in on a new, next-generation hardware concept that for now will simply be known as NX.
"It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year," Iwata said on media day.
With the Wii U still being a fairly new system, it makes you wonder what the NX will be. Will it be a new system? Is the NX a predecessor to the Nintendo 3DS? Are we going to see something else entirely? Whatever the NX will be Iwata promises fans it will be a "dedicated gaming system."
That was not the only announcement for Tuesday's media day, either. Iwata also said Nintendo is currently working with Japanese mobile gaming company DeNA to develop smartphone games. This may finally mean the debut of Super Mario or Pokémon on the iPhone.
The best part of this announcement is that Nintendo looks to be working on gaming's equivalent to Netflix.
"Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service," Iwata said.
While the two were announced at once, the DeNA project and NX are not related. Both will be separate entities.
These dual announcements are just another part of this year's Nintendo resurgence. Super Smash Brothers 3DS/Wii U won the SXSW award for Excellence in Multiplayer while Majora's Mask was a critically acclaimed title getting near perfect scores on EGM, Polygon, Examiner and Gamesbeat.
