It's been 13 years since we last saw FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully on the TV screen, but this week we've learned that Fox's hit sci-fi series The X-Files is returning in a limited series reboot season, featuring 6 brand new episodes. Stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are set to reprise their iconic roles, and showrunner Chris Carter will come back to helm the revival season. This news comes after rumors started spreading about the return of the series, but Fox decided to break the news before the speculation could properly spread!

"I think of it as a 13-year commercial break. The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories," Carter said in an official statement released by Fox, according to UPROXX.

This new season will run for 6 episodes, with production beginning this summer (via IGN). Both stars currently appear in shows this summer, with Anderson showing up in NBC's Hannibal and Douchovny acting in the Charles Manson-themed drama Aquarius on the same network. These shows will air back-to-back this summer, which is sure to please X-Files fans in a lesser way. "The X-Files' was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture - yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning," Fox's Gary Newman and Dana Walden said in a joint statement, according to Slash Film. "Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as The X-Files and we're ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they've been waiting for."
