Bollywood 'Game of Thrones' Adaption 'Rani Mahal' Set During 1857 Indian Rebellion

Sony is remaking HBO's Game of Thrones series, but it won't be a spin-off for us here in the States. This remake is taking place in India! According to Pakistan's Ary News, the Indian GoT adaption will be called Rani Mahal and will be set in 1857, during the Indian Rebellion.

Rani Mahal is an important name in Indian History, as it's the name of a royal palace in the city of Jhansi that was bombed by the British during the rebellion. The biggest challenge going forward with the GoT adaption will be to try to follow George RR Martin's format of nudity, violence, dragons and mythical beasts within the realm Bollywood censorship.

Ary News posted the plot of the show and its cast on their website:

"Daenerys Targareyn is a character from Game Of Thrones who is also referred to as the 'Mother of Dragons' on account of the three dragons she commands. Originally a princess, she along with her brother were exiled when her father was killed and his kingdom sacked," says the news site. "The Indian series has already found its Daenerys, Jon Snow, and Cersei Lannister. Daenerys will be played by Sakshi Tanwar, while Parth Samthaan and Anita Hassanandani will play Jon Snow and Cersei Lannister, respectively."

Tanwar is one of India's most famous actresses and will be the main attraction for Rani Mahal. Her most prominent Bollywood role was in the soap opera Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki. In 2002 the show won an Indian Telly Award for Best Drama and was voted Path Breaking Soap Opera on Indian Television of the Decade.

GoT might be the next worldwide smash hit to have a lot of cultural adaptions. These days, it happens with popular shows. Probably the best example is the Ricky Gervais' creation, The Office. His show had American, Indian, French and Arab remakes.

At this moment, production of the GoT remake has yet to begin. As for our show, Season 5 of Game of Thrones will be airing on April 5th.
