Hampton University Student Cullen Haviland, 19, Commits Suicide at Library of HBCU

MStars News has learned that a 19-year-old student named Cullen Haviland reportedly committed suicide in the library of Hampton University. According to the historically black university's statement, no foul play was involved. Haviland was a native of Temecula, California, and a physics major who participated in a number of organizations, including the National Society of Black Physicists and the Society of Physics Students. He helped raise the attention of youth to take an interest in the sciences.

HU's full statement read:

Hampton, Va. -- The Hampton University community is extremely saddened by the death of one of our students, Cullen Haviland. We extend our deepest sympathy to Cullen's family and friends for their profound loss. He was pronounced dead in the Hampton University Library. There is no foul play suspected at this time. The incident is being investigated by Hampton City Police and the Hampton University Police.

A memorial service will be held for Cullen on Wednesday, April 1, at 1 p.m. in Ogden Hall. Counselors are available for grief counseling at the Counseling Center located in Armstrong Slater Building or by calling 757-727-5617.

There have been hundreds of students and others posting the hashtag, "#PrayForHamptonU."

According to one tweet, Haviland jumped from the fifth floor of the school's library. The tweet read: "Praying for the family of the Hampton student that committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of the library."

Cullen's death is still under investigation.
