It looks like there is a little more to the shocking Grey's Anatomy death then people want to admit. While Patrick Dempsey was tragically killed off in last week's episode, it turns out that Shonda Rhimes had no choice but to have him meet his fate. While Derek Shepherd has been a staple on the series since the first episode, Rhimes decided that it was time for him to go after his diva antics started causing disruptions on set.

A source close to the site spoke out to Radar Online, about the shocking exit.

"Shonda had no other choice but to fire Patrick! He had been showing up late, and was holding up production because he couldn't remember his lines," the insider revealed. "This was such a departure from Patrick's prior work ethic as he has always been on time, and ready to go."

However, it could have been Patrick's personal life that played a big part in why he was forgetting his lines and being difficult to work with, as the Inquistr reported that his wife Jillian Fink filed for divorce earlier this year.

"There was definitely a lot going on in Patrick's personal life with the breakdown of his marriage, and Shonda had been very understanding," an insider explained.

While fans saw Derek head to Washington D.C. during the second part of season eleven, it seems that this was a trial suspension, handed down by the creator.

"He was indeed suspended mid-season, and was given another chance to get back on track," a source explained. "When Patrick returned, there was a chip on his shoulder, and the cast was being impacted."

Patrick also mentioned to Entertainment Weekly that he wasn't treated to a going away party from the cast and crew, saying, "It was very quiet. It was very poetic, I got in my car, got in rush hour traffic, and two hours later I was home."

Rest In Peace, Derek Shepherd.
