The Nintendo 3DS got off to a shaky start. A few months into its inception the handheld console was forced to go through a price drop and it looked like Nintendo's latest product was a flop. These days it's finally looked at as a success. In the United States it has sold 15 million units and world wide it has sold more than 52 million. Nintendo released a statement regarding the 3DS' numbers. They lauded themselves for the achievement and thank Mario, Zelda and Pokémon.
"'Software sells hardware' has been Nintendo's mantra for nearly 30 years. And, when you consistently make fun, unique, exclusive games featuring the likes of Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, and Pokémon, you can sell a lot of hardware," Nintendo said.
The other consoles to sell more than 15 million units are the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, the original DS and Wii. The 3DS is eighth behind these consoles. Nintendo says in the first six months of 2015 3DS hardware sales have risen by more than 50 percent. They speculate the reason for this is because of the Nintendo 3DS XL launch in February.
The 3DS continues Nintendo's longstanding success. Since the NES first arrived on US shores the company has sold more than 270 million pieces of hardware. In the statement Nintendo says 2015 will continue being one of the stronger years in its recent history.
"While crossing 15 million units is certainly a significant milestone, we are equally excited about the new momentum we've created in 2015 thanks to new hardware and an unrivaled library of software," Nintendo continued. "With more great games on the way and a hardware system for every type of gamer, 2015 is shaping up to be one of the stronger years yet for Nintendo 3DS in the United States."
