After years of being known as one of the most famous symbols of gay and LGBT pride and rights, the Stonewall Inn has officially been made a landmark. Located in New York City, the Stonewall Inn was the site of the renowned Stonewall Riots, which took place back in 1969 when being homosexual was basically an illegal act. And now, just about 46 years later, the Landmarks Preservation Commission has announced its status in not only the LGBT community, but also New York's history.
Per a report from CNN, co-owner of the Stonewall Inn, Stacy Lentz, recently said that the landmark status is "such a win for LGBT New Yorkers and the community around the world."
Calling it a "symbol of fighting against repression," Lentz claims that the announcement is the second reason to celebrate this week, as the Supreme Court will be announcing its ruling on nationalizing same-sex marriage.
The Stonewall Riots act was and still is a famous event in gay pride. Back in 2010, Stonewall Uprising was released – a film documenting the events of the riots, and how they forever shaped the landscape of gay pride.
