In 1984 the former Bruce Jenner, now known as Caitlyn Jenner, proudly carried the Olympic torch for the United States. Now that special torch, once held by Jenner, is being auctioned off at a high price. Apparently it is going for more than $20,000 and is being offered by Heritage Auctions in Chicago during their Platinum Sports Auction. Anyone looking to add the torch to their collection will be able to on July 30th.
The man selling it is Bob Lorsch. Lorsch is a Los Angeles philanthropist and entrepreneur who recruited Jenner to run the Lake Tahoe, Nevada leg of the torch relay.
In 1976 Jenner became an American hero after winning an Olympic gold medal in the decathlon. According to an interview in 1984, Jenner said she participated in the Olympics because of how impressed she was with how the host city of Los Angeles handled the event. In the interview Jenner admitted she hated running.
"I hate to run," Jenner said. "I don't run. I can't stand running. And anyway I know people will laugh at me when they see my knees. But it's for a good cause, so I'll do it."
According to Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage, the torch is the first significant piece of Jenner memorabilia to go on auction since her transition. Jenner announced her transition back in April when she came out as a transgender woman during an interview with Diane Sawyer. Shortly after that she made her Caitlyn debut on the cover of Vanity Fair's June issue. At the ESPYs in the end of July, Jenner will receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.
