Stephen Colbert seems to be getting antsy waiting for the Sept. 8 premiere of his Late Show. He decided that to prepare for the series, he is going to "have lunch" with his viewers every day this week with his new miniseries, "Lunch With Stephen."
The first episode of "Lunch With Stephen" premiered online on Monday and there are follow-ups each day until the weekend. The idea is pretty straightforward -- you can watch the video during your lunch break while eating at your desk.
"I want to get to know my audience just a little bit better," Colbert says in the first video.
In the videos, Colbert is sitting across from the camera with his own specially picked out lunch. On Monday, he's on a diet, so he's only eating small sounding foods: Little Caesers, Thin Mints and baby back ribs. On Tuesday, he's eating "locally": a Snickers bar from the office vending machine.
Colbert talks like an overbearing office-mate, spilling his dream of opening up a B&B... one that customers can never leave.
In Monday's video, he mentions finding a bag of cash on the subway. The situation with the bag of cash escalates in Tuesday's video as he brings his lunch mate -- you -- into the potentially dangerous drama. We can only hope that the absurdity continues to grow with Colbert's signature hilarity.
The Late Show premieres on Sept. 8. In the meantime, aside from this miniseries, Colbert recently put out an interview with astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson discussing Pluto on the Late Show YouTube channel. A new website for the show was launched and we all got to see Colbert shave off his "Colbeard."
Earlier this summer, he announced that jazz musician, Jon Batiste, who had a thrilling appearance on The Colbert Report, will be his Late Show bandleader. Batiste's musical performance brought the whole audience, including Colbert, out onto the streets of New York blasting music. Batiste is known for these impromptu public concerts, which he calls "love riots."
