Darren Young is the first wrestler to come out as gay while still at the top of their game. Other wrestlers to announce they were gay (but did it while not on any active roster) are current WWE agent Pat Patterson and the now-deceased Chris Kanyon of WCW fame. Young's announcement was a big deal for the current WWE Tag-Team champion and he has done his best to champion LGBT rights. While at the ESPY Awards, Stephanie McMahon was asked about the wrestler's character and the heiress to the McMahon throne claims Young's character is not gay.
McMahon made the revelation to the Daily Beast:
"Darren Young was the first WWE superstar to really come out as being homosexual, but his character in the show is not," she said. "At least, we haven't done anything with it either way — just yet."
McMahon then went on to say that they would absolutely do a gay angle with Young, or with another character in general, but it has to make sense in the ring and business-wise:
"It could very well pop up in WWE because we are all about what's relevant, and what's pop culture, and what people want to see. So if there is an opportunity, we might just take it," she said. "You know, in WWE our storylines are a year long. They don't go episodic, week to week; they really are the arc from WrestleMania to WrestleMania. So sometimes it takes a little longer than people would like for the seeds to grow. But we're constantly planting them."
In the past the tag-team champion was critical of the company for going to a country like Abu Dhabi. According to him, the WWE shouldn't be sending talent to a country that looks down upon women and gays.
"Why do we bring the best entertainers into a country like Abu Dhabi and they look down upon women and gays? I get it! #MillionsofDollars," Young said in a tweet he later deleted.
