Tennis star Novak Djokovic complained about the smell of weed while he was playing at the Rogers Cup in Montreal over the weekend. During the match, he told the umpire that the smell of marijuana had made him dizzy while playing against France's Jeremy Chardy. Considering the importance of matches like these, it is understandable that an athlete would be concerned about a spectator's behavior affecting the game.
"Someone is smoking weed, I can smell it, and I'm getting dizzy," Djokovic told the umpire, according to the Telegraph. He also put his hands to his mouth making the gesture for smoking a joint. "Somebody is getting high. Can you smell it? The whole place smells of it."
Despite the distraction, Djokovic went on to win the match against Chardy 6-4, 6-4.
"You can't believe how bad it was. Whoever it is, he's pretty high and I hope he doesn't come back tomorrow. Because it's a pretty bad smell. I didn't enjoy it," Djokovic said after the match.
Marijuana is only legal in Montreal for medical use. Djokovic said he also smelled weed during his match on Friday.
"Somebody's really enjoying his life around the tennis court," he said. "I think it stopped after a while. I felt I was playing better as I was inhaling!"
Although Djokovic won his match against Chard strongly, he ended up losing in the finals to Andy Murray 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Before the final match, Murray had an eight-match losing streak against Djokovic. This is Murray's fourth title of the year.
Murray dedicated his win to his coach, Amélie Mauresmo, who gave birth to a son that same morning.
"My coach, Amélie Mauresmo, is back home," Murray said after the game. "She gave birth to a baby boy this morning. I'm not sure she will have stayed up to watch this one. I'm sure she was a little bit tired but Amélie, this one's for you, thank you."
