Season five of MTV's hit high school comedy show Awkward premieres on Aug. 31, 2015, leading to graduation and possibly the end of the series; but are fans ready to say goodbye? Showrunners Mike Chessler and Chris Alberghini understand that the end of high school should mean the end of the show, but the final episodes of the upcoming season allegedly open the door to new storylines, which could mean more seasons of Awkward! Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the upcoming final season (so far), Chessler opened up about bringing the high school story to an end, but wasn't ready to announce the series' finale.
"In terms of it being the end, it might not be. We don't know about that," the executive producer revealed. "We were just feeling like 5A is the end of the high school chapter of the show, and 5B is a whole new reboot of the show. We finished shooting 5B in July, and we're really excited about how that came out. On the one hand, it's a nice resolution, but on the other hand, it opens a lot of doors, so this may not be the end of the show."
If the two-part season truly isn't the final installment of the show, the cast still has to sing new contracts to film new episodes.
Previous reports suggested that season five would indeed be the end of the series. According to a TV Line report from last year, MTV has already decided to pull the plug on the series (via Cinema Blend) . Luckily, it sounds like the network might still be speaking with the showrunners before the decision is officially made.
