Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara star in Carol, a movie about forbidden lesbian love between two women in the 1950s. It seems as though Carol (Blanchett) is stuck in a loveless marriage of convenience when she meets a young Manhattan department store clerk (Mara).Watch the first trailer for the new movie below.
Yahoo! News premiered the first trailer for the film from StudioCanal UK. The film is directed by Todd Haynes and it is based off of Patricia Highsmith's novel The Price of Salt. The film was a huge success at its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. "Mara, 30, won best actress for the film - the '50s-set romance is already generating major Oscar buzz," People says. Kyle Chandler also stars in the film as Carol's husband. It is also set to screen at the upcoming London Film Festival.
The teaser trailer of the film that was recently released shows Carol falling for the young woman who she met in a department store. Although there isn't much dialogue, you can see them meeting up at a restaurant, sipping martinis and laughing together in what seems to turn into a blossoming romance. The entire montage is set to the song "My Foolish Heart," which really sets the tone of the film. Director Haynes, Blanchett and Mara were interviewed at Cannes (via THR). Blanchett describes her character as "not broken" and that her desires are unconventional at the time. She has managed her situation and is in control of herself due to expectations at the time, but Blanchett believes that this is "a love story across all sorts of sexual persuasions." This is juxtaposed with Mara's character who is lost the entire time. She has the job and a boyfriend and Carol comes into her life and opens her eyes and it's not the easiest decision.
The film is set to hit theaters November 20th this year so keep your eyes peeled for the official trailer. In the mean time, here is the teaser along with the interview at Cannes.
