After taking a break to care for her husband, singer Celine Dion has revealed that René Angélil's last wish is to "die in her arms."
Dion's husband and manager has been battling throat cancer for some time now. During an interview, the legendary singer admitted that she loved singing but didn't want to return to performing due to her sick husband.
"I didn't want to be here at first, I don't need it. Don't get me wrong, I love singing for people, but I have priorities," the 47-year-old said.
Dion is returning to Caesar's Palace stage to perform her Las Vegas show, which starts on August 27. Dion claimed that reason she decided to come back was because her husband "wants her out there."
"But René really gave me a gift," she said, while explaining, "All my grieving, it was during this last year. I think I've got this. For now. When it hits me, it's going to hit me. But my biggest job is to tell my husband, we're fine. I'll take care of our kids. You'll watch us from another spot."
Dion has been glued to her husband since she was 12-years-old when they first met, as Angélil became her manager. The couple tied the knot in 1994.
During his battle, Angélil has had multiple procedures in Boston hospitals. While his wife hits the stage to grace fans with her beautiful voice, Angélil will be resting at the family's Las Vegas home.
Dion revealed that she had to feed her husband three times a day, and that her husband has been eating through an IV [feeding tube] for the past two years. At that time, Celine tearfully said that they were "taking life one day at a time, [but] we are choosing to live."
The mother of three claimed that doctors didn't have a date, month, week, or year to give her and her husband when they asked how long Angélil had to live.
"We have asked (doctors) many times, how long does he have, three weeks, three months? René wants to know," she revealed. "But they say they don't know."
This has to be one of the toughest moments of Dion's life, because she refers to her husband as the "only boyfriend she ever had." Dion sadly said that she and Angélil talk about his funeral arrangements and last wishes a lot.
She said sometimes she asks her husband and manager if he's scared or does he want to take about anything dealing with his cancer, "And René says to me, 'I want to die in your arms.' OK, fine, I'll be there, you'll die in my arms," she described.
According to Angélil he wants his wife to continue to work and do interviews. With work comes time apart, however, and according to Celine her husband gets scared when she's not home with him.
She says, "So it (hacks) him off to not see me all day and over here working. But he wants me to do this, do the show, do the interviews. But he freaks when I'm not home with him, too."
The couple have 3 boys together. René-Charles is now 14 years-old. He's starting to take on "manhood," as his father's health declines.
Celine said her eldest soon is "becoming 'the man of my life,' although he often finds it difficult to see his father in such poor health."
Her twins, Nelson and Eddy, 4 "don't know their father in any other state, and I'll say 'Come on, let's go feed Dad,' and they'll come along with me," the mother said.
Hopefully, Celine can pull it together while on stage and showcase her powerful voice during her performances. She did admit that the first show will more than likely be emotional, but insists that she's on that stage to please her husband.
"When you see someone who is fighting so hard, it has a big impact on you," she explained. "You have two choices. You look at your husband who's very sick and you can't help, and it kills you. Or you look at your husband that's sick and you say, 'I got you. I got it. I'm here. It's going to be just fine.'"
