DJ Mustard threw together a surprise for the youth at a middle school in his Los Angeles hometown, hosting a backpack giveaway for students. The famous hip-hop producer surprised over 800 students at the Audubon Middle School and GIfted Magnet Center in Leimet Park in Los Angeles, which is his hometown. Students received tons of goodies, such as brand new backpacks filled with essential school supplies, which were donated by Mustard and PUMA.
Mustard was also joined by two of his 10 Summers label signees, Choice & RJ, who all went to at least 6 different classrooms where they signed autographs and took plenty of photos with students. “When I was growing up, we never had anyone who made it out the hood come back and talk to us at school. I came here today to let them know they are on the right track and that I was in their shoes so it’s possible to be successful. Just keep going. It helps for kids to see that for themselves in person and not just on TV or in magazines,” the producer said of the highly-successful event.
Mustard has been making some serious power moves in the recent years, having landed a major producer deal with Roc Nation in 2013. He is one of the signature beat-makers in music at the moment, with tons of artists ranging from YG, Big Sean, Fergie and even Jessie J taking on his signature sounds for their projects. He first got his start as a big name in the business being rapper YG’s official DJ over the past few years, despite their brief feud last year. This weekend, he is set to take the stage at Made In America, where he will be accompanied by sets from Beyonce, The Weeknd, Nick Jonas, Meek Mill and more.
