Tragedy struck on the set of a that Tom Cruise is filming. MStars News has learned that a tiny plane being used on the set of the new movie, Mena, which is being filmed in Colombia, crashed, leaving two people dead, including Hollywood pilot, Alan David Purwin (seen above) and one other person seriously hurt. According to People, the plane crashed in the Colombian Andes on Friday, Sept. 11. Cruise is a trained pilot, but he wasn't on the plane at the time of the deadly crash. Variety revealed that the two people who died on the aircraft were identified as American Alan David Purwin and Colombian Carlos Berl. Another pilot, American Jimmy Lee Garind was seriously hurt and was taken to a hospital in Medellin. Cruise had traveled to Colombia back in August to start work on the movie, which is about a pilot who worked for the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar. In the snapshot below, Purwin shared a photo while working on the set. In the picture, Cruise is standing in the middle a group of Military Forces of Colombia where they were all smiles.

It's crazy how things can change so fast. That photo was taken just two weeks ago. Before Purwin died in Friday's crash, he also posted a photo of the plane landing on a dirt road while on set. He even revealed that he enjoyed working on his job. That photo was posted a mere three days ago.

According to the Associated Press, the twin-engine Aerostar that was was headed to Medellin encountered bad weather late Friday afternoon after taking off from Santa Fe de Antioquia.
A spokesperson for Mena's distributor, Universal, said in a statement:
"An aircraft carrying crew members crashed while returning to Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport in Medellin following production wrap on the film Mena resulting in two fatalities," the statement continued, "Further details are not available at this time. On behalf of the production, our hearts and prayers go out to the crew members and their families at this difficult time."
