WWE will present the 2015 edition of Night of Champions from the Toyota Center in Houston. There are plenty of spoilers and rumors flying around about this pay-per-view, and we've got our full preview below with predictions for each match.
Neville and The Lucha Dragons vs. The Cosmic Wasteland (Stardust and The Ascension) (Pre-Show Match)
Maybe I'm just a sucker for the whole comic book theme surrounding this feud, especially with the inclusion of Arrow star Stephen Amell at SummerSlam, but this is just good, plain fun. The pairing of Stardust and The Ascension is a great idea, and we have an entire team of high flyers with Neville and the Lucha Dragons.
Unfortunately, there really are no stakes to this match, which means the faces will probably win.
Winners: Neville and The Lucha Dragons
Dolph Ziggler vs. Rusev (w/Summer Rae)
I wanted to like this feud, I really did. I tried to defend this feud as much as I could. But it's just gone on too long and had too little juice for me to care anymore.
This is nothing against the performers in the ring. When Dolph Ziggler and Rusev square off, the matches are always great because Rusev's offense looks vicious and painful while Ziggler sells like he's been pumped full of shotgun shells every time he gets hit.
But the story here appeals to the least common denominator in such a way that it makes the action unenjoyable. I don't care who wins because I hate everybody involved. Rusev is a jerk because he's terrorizing his ex and her new boyfriend, but also because he's showing a weird obsession with her that completely disrespects his new girlfriend. Summer Rae is a jerk because she's delighting in making Lana cry. Dolph Ziggler is a jerk because he's sunk to Rusev's level and is now using Summer Rae against him. And Lana...well, I wouldn't call her a jerk, but she's also freaking out about Ziggler and Summer Rae even though Summer is clearly manipulating the situation. Also, she's hurt, so she gets sympathy points.
Winner: Eh, Rusev, I guess, I dunno
The New Day (c) (w/Xavier Woods) vs. The Dudley Boyz for the WWE Tag Team Championship
This is almost the polar opposite of the previous match. I love everyone involved here. The New Day are so wonderfully ridiculous that I just want to see them do things on my TV screen for hours at a time. The Dudley Boyz will always get the nostalgia pop, but it's clear they still have the drive and the ability to run with the current crop of talent.
I think The New Day retains here via some interference from Xavier Woods in order to set up a Tables match in which the Dudleys become 10-time champions.
Winners: The New Day
Ryback (c) vs. Kevin Owens
If Kevin Owens is truly going to rise up the ladder in WWE following his feuds with John Cena and Cesaro, then he needs this win. His whole gimmick is that he's a bully, but he backs it up by actually winning matches. He beat Cena, he beat Cesaro, so now let him beat Ryback and capture some gold.
People talk all the time about making the Intercontinental Championship relevant again, so maybe Owens is finally the one to do that for them.
Winner: Kevin Owens
Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, and TBD vs. The Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt, Braun Strowman, Luke Harper)
The entire intrigue of this match is in the identity of Ambrose and Reigns' mystery partner, so let's quickly run through some possibilities.
Daniel Bryan: He would undoubtedly receive the biggest pop upon his return, and it would make sense in the storyline because Bryan has history with the Wyatts. This is our top choice.
Erick Rowan: He's still dealing with a torn bicep, but if he's healthy, he could conceivably return against his former family.
Kane: Please God, no.
Chris Jericho: We're including this one because rumors have been circulating that Y2J's name has been tossed around as the third man.
Baron Corbin: A fake photo of Corbin as the third man leaked online last week. It didn't make any sense then and it doesn't now.
Savio Vega/The Great Khali: Reigns and Ambrose jokingly mentioned them in a backstage promo with JoJo. Clearly this was misdirection, so it's one of these two men.
Winner: Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, and TBD
Nikki Bella (c) vs. Charlotte for the WWE Divas Championship
The stipulation here is that Nikki loses the title if she is counted out or disqualified, so she has no champion's advantage really. Now that she has broken AJ Lee's record for most consecutive days as champion, the story can't really progress unless Charlotte wins the belt. Then she can move onto a feud with Paige, which has been teased recently.
Winner: Charlotte
Seth Rollins (c) vs. John Cena for the WWE United States Championship
Seth Rollins (c) vs. Sting for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
There are so many ways these two matches could go that it's hard to keep track. So let's just lay out the possible combinations as simply as possible.
1) Rollins retains both belts
2) Rollins retains the U.S. title but loses the world title
3) Rollins retains the world title but loses the U.S. title
4) Rollins loses both belts
5) Rollins retains the world title, but Sheamus cashes in his Money in the Bank contract and beats him for the belt
But there are numerous variations within that. Sting could win the belt and Sheamus could cash in on him. Rollins could retain one or both belts by disqualification. Triple H could turn on Rollins.
My head hurts.
Winner: Seth Rollins loses all titles, Sheamus cashes in on Sting
