'The Walking Dead' Season 6 SPOILERS: Will Rick and Jessie Romance Happen?

The Walking Dead Season 6 has finally arrived on AMC, and the premiere was one of the best hours the show has ever produced. Within it, we got a bit more of Rick and Jessie's relationship, but will a romance happen between the two? We've got some spoilers on that very subject.

The show killed off Rick's wife, Lori, in Season 3, and the now-ruthless leader of the survivors killed Jessie's abusive husband, Pete, after he accidentally killed Reg, the husband of the leader of the Alexandria Safe Zone. Anyone who has read the comics knows that Rick and Jessie eventually pair up, so why hasn't it happened on the show?

Showrunner Scott Gimple spoke to TVLine and reasoned that the intense tragedies that have occurred recently have preoccupied them, so love isn't exactly on their minds.

“I’ve been in scary situations — car crashes and things,” he said, “and, in the immediate term, your mind is on other things.”

Rick is also going through a transition from surviving out in the world to living in comfort with a roof and a bed inside Alexandria.

“They’ve found this place of safety [in Alexandria], and it’s super-weird for them,” Gimple said. “They’re going to live wholly as human beings — physically, emotionally, sexually — but they are coming out of a very long journey where they weren’t exactly living like people. So there’s a transition there.”

It's clear that Rick has the hots for Jessie and that she feels something for him, too, but neither one is in a position yet to act on it. But will it happen eventually?

“You could call her a love interest,” Gimple admits. “There’s a connection [between them] on a lot of levels. But Jessie does have her own story and her own arc. Rick is part of that, but Rick is not the arc.

“It has everything to do with how desperately she wants to become a survivor and someone who can protect her family on her own. She’s not looking for someone to do it for her.”
