WWE has been dealing with ratings at all-time lows recently, though much of the conversation has been about the flagship show, Monday Night Raw, rather than the B show, Thursday Night SmackDown, which is also suffering in the ratings department. But it could get a boost soon if Jerry "The King" Lawler's words come true and the show becomes live!
As almost all WWE fans know, the company tapes SmackDown on Tuesdays and then airs the show on Thursday nights on the SyFy Network. But SmackDown is moving to the USA Network, where Raw currently airs, starting in 2016, and the hope is that this move gives the ratings a shot in the arm.
But there could be even more changes coming if Jerry Lawler's words become reality. In an interview with Scott Yager at New York Comic-Con 2015, The King said that "it's a very good possibility that in the near future, SmackDown may be live."
This could be exactly what the blue brand needs in order to regain relevance, which has been it's biggest problem ever since the brand split ended several years ago. When SmackDown was its own show, you had to tune into it in order to follow the stories. Now, SmackDown has become completely and totally meaningless.
Yes, you can still watch SmackDown and see some excellent wrestling, but you don't need to tune in at 8 p.m. on Thursdays in order to do that. You can read spoilers that come out on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning and then go online to watch clips of whatever match you want if you see something interesting.
Moreover, what happens on SmackDown just has no bearing on the stories that WWE tells week to week on Raw. Say, for example, that Seth Rollins gets the upper hand on Kane at the end of Raw. That story doesn't continue on SmackDown on Thursday. Instead, it continues on Raw the following Monday.
Hopefully, a move to a live SmackDown restores some much-needed importance to the show.
