News broke last year about the latest installment following its past successes: Underworld (2003) Underworld: Evolution (2006), Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009) and Underworld: Awakenings (2012). Cory Goodman will write this chapter's script and new series director Anna Foerster will take lead. This will be Foerster's first role as a feature director however her cinematographer credits include Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and White House Down.
The script has been kept under wraps thus far, although the title hints at a new generation of vampires taking over leader Selene's mission. Reports are saying that the film will focus on younger vampires and werewolves who continue the supernatural battles to keep the underworld in balance. Producers have also teased recently that they're already in talks for a sixth chapter.
With a new director and possible reboot, Underworld 5 may attract new moviegoers in addition to the series' unwavering legion of fans.
Next year, Beckinsale will also star in Whit Stillman's Jane Austen adaptation Love and Friendship.
Underworld 5: Next Generation is scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 21, 2016.
