The highly anticipated Netflix revival of Gilmore Girls has an unusual format that is finally starting to make sense. The four 90-minute episodes that fans are looking forward to will take place during each season of a calendar year.

Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and Executive Producer Daniel Palladino will be back to both write and direct the storyline, which takes place eight years after the series' finale. Negotiations with the original cast are still underway as fans hope to see stars like Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Kelly Bishop and Scott Patterson return to the show.

Last June, Sherman-Palladino shared with fans that a Gilmore Girls movie wasn't in the works and that the universe would have to align for a revival to happen.

"It would have to be the right everything, like the right format, the right timing, the right way. It would have to be honored in a certain way. And I think that if it ever came around, I think we would all jump in and do it," she said at the ATX Television Fest's cast reunion. "If it ever happened, I promise you, we'll do it correctly."

The original series took place in a small fictional town set in Connecticut and followed the famous fast-talking mother-daughter pair, Lorelei and Rory Gilmore, for seven successful seasons. Over the years, the cast had many stars that included Melissa McCarthy, Jared Padalecki and Chad Michael Murray.

Cast members themselves have also enjoyed speculating what their characters may be doing eight years later. In a recent interview, Lauren Graham shared what she expected for the present day Lorelei and Rory.

"What's fun to imagine is the way in which now, at this age, these two are even more of best friends," she said. "There's less need for, of course, Rory in her late-20s or whatever she would be, to be parented. So, I could imagine the vacations, the adventures, the fun they have talking about their relationships in a more adult way."
