There is a lot of outrage in the city of Chicago after video footage was released on Tuesday showing a white police officier Jason Van Dyke shooting at 17-year-old black teenager, Laquan McDonald 16 times. MStars News has learned that the NAACP is calling the graphic video "horrific."
In a tweet the NAACP said: "The attack on #LaquanMcDonald was horrific and justice cannot go unserved. His family & the community deserve action."
McDonald's death happened last year in October. Authorities said that McDonald was armed with a three-inch knife when Van Dyke and another police officer started coming at him. After McDonald wouldn't put down his weapon, Van Dyke started shooting the 17-year-old.
The dash-cam view showed McDonald running, then walking down the street as a number of police cars go by. A few seconds later you can see Van Dyke and the other officer move closer to McDonald as Van Dyke starts to shoot. McDonald starts spinning around as if he was trying to get away from bullets, falling to the ground while still being shot. The sad part is when you can see gun powder hit his body as the smoke goes into the air.
On Tuesday, Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond. The city's mayor asked that protesters march in peace.
"I believe this is a moment that can build bridges of understanding rather than become a barrier of misunderstanding. I understand that the people will be upset and will want to protest when they see this video," Mayor Rahm Emanuel said. "We as a city must rise to this moment."
McDonald's family didn't want the police video released, but a freelance journalist used the Freedom of Information Act and their request was granted. McDonald's family released a statement that read: "This is a difficult time for us. As we have said in the past, while we would prefer that the video not be released, we understand that a court has ordered otherwise. ."
