24-year-old St. Louis Rams wide receiver, Stedman Bailey, was shot in the head during what appeared to be a drive-by shooting in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Tuesday night. He underwent surgery after the shooting and, despite the horrific injuries sustained, he is in serious, yet stable, condition.

CNN added that Bailey was sitting in a car with four others – two of them minors – when another vehicle arrived and opened fire at about 8:45 p.m. Bailey and the car's driver, Antwan Reeves, were both shot in the exchange.

While further details about the incident are few and far between, Ram's head coach Jeff Fisher had this to say when asked about the matter:

"It's a very, very unfortunate incident and what we are able to gather, he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time," Fisher said, via ESPN. "We're still waiting to get information but guys love Sted. Sted is a very popular player, great teammate, very, very talented player. It's unfortunate we were a week away from him getting back in the building and getting ready to help us win."

Bailey, a third-round draft pick for the Rams in 2013, left West Virginia University with the second most receptions in school history. He played in all of the Rams games during his rookie campaign, compiling 17 receptions. He added 30 more the following year with one touchdown. Before being suspended by the NFL for violating its substance abuse policy this year, Bailey had 12 catches and one touchdown, via CNN.

And while Bailey is facing tough times, he does have the support of his teammates and players around the league. Among them, college teammate, Tavon Austin.

Austin, who is Bailey's closest friend on the Rams, has been unable to get in contact with Bailey. However, he has kept the faith that he will be able to get back to full strength and one day return to football.

"He'll be all right," Austin said, via ESPN. "He's going to be good. It's rough just seeing it and believing it, that's the hardest part. Knowing that's the type of brother you have, I've spent seven years of my life with him.

"I definitely know his strength. He's definitely going to pull through. The offseason, I'll be back down there beside him, pushing with him and getting him back beside me and Kenny and all of us. Whatever it takes just to get him back."
