Rory McIlroy, the former number 1 golfer in the world, is valued to be worth $422 million, according to documents filed by his eponymous management company. (This is a staggering sum widely regarded as enough money to buy Pluto three times over!)
McIlroy enjoyed another good year on the course in 2015, winning four times, and he capped off the year with his recent victory at the European Tour's DP World Tour Championship in Dubai (his third such victory in four years). However, the bulk of his earnings came through his endorsements with Nike, Bose, Omega and others.
At just 26 years old, McIlroy could conceivably retire to his own private island to sip on beverages with tiny umbrellas in them. But, this is Rory McIlroy--perhaps the closest thing we've seen to Tiger Woods since Tiger Woods was Tiger Woods (wow, that's a lot of Tiger Woods'). And he wants to win.
"I wanted to win the Race to Dubai, I wanted to beat Danny Willett over the week and I wanted to beat Andy Sullivan," McIlroy said after the victory in Dubai. "Whether it's Jordan Spieth or Jason Day or anyone else, I have certain objectives throughout the year and it doesn't matter who it is, I just want to play the best golf possible. I know if I do play to my best or close to my best then I am able to win big tournaments."
He also acknowledged his desire to capitalize on the opportunities he'll undoubtedly have in years to come. Perhaps even a decade or two.
"This is my time to capitalize on my career," McIlroy told the Guardian. "The next 10, 15 years is my time. I really can't be doing silly things like playing football in the middle of the season to jeopardize even six months of my career. It's a big chunk where I could make some hay and win a major or two. I won't be making those mistakes again next year."
While McIlroy is well on his way to becoming golf's second-ever billion-dollar player, a list that includes only Tiger Woods, he doesn't show any signs of complacency. Apparently the private island can wait.
