Facing negative comments is an inevitable part of being a celebrity, something comedian Amy Schumer knows all too well. The star, who is being recognized for her role in Trainwreck (she also penned the screenplay for the Judd Apatow-directed film), is now opening up about one critic who made negative remarks about her looks, and then later said he wanted to date her.
The 34-year-old star told The Hollywood Reporter that she was worried about what people would say when Trainwreck first came out. She told the outlet, "I was like, everyone's going to say, 'She's not pretty enough to be in this movie.' And then only one dude wrote that, and people really attacked him, and then he redacted that and wanted to date me."
And although the starlet did not mention names, the sleuthy folks over at E! are reporting that the man in question could be Hollywood Elsewhere writer Jeffrey Wells, who wrote some very unflattering things about Schumer earlier this year.
Wells praises Schumer's wit and cleverness, but says that ultimately, "there's no way she'd be an object of heated romantic interest in the real world."
He went on to say, "And yet that's the apparent premise of Apatow's film. Schumer's wide facial features reminded me of a blonde Lou Costello around the time of Buck Privates, or Jennifer Aniston's somewhat heavier, not-as-lucky sister who watches a lot of TV."
According to E!, Wells' comments were largely slammed by fans online. So much so, that he later did a follow-up piece in which he apologized about the comments and ultimately said that she is "a first-class talent and deserves more respect than what I gave her."
Schumer ultimately had the last laugh. She is nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in Trainwreck in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical or Comedy category.
The Globes air Jan. 10, 2016.
