Sports can do some really cool things. They give people joy, passion and hope. It brings people together from all walks of life. And, every once in a while, it can even be a source of inspiration. Which is exactly what Zach Hodskins is in college basketball. The University of Florida Men's Basketball (Gators) walk-on was born without a hand on his left arm. However, he didn't let that stop him from becoming a really good basketball player. On Tuesday night, Hodskins recorded his first collegiate bucket during the Gators' 89-65 victory over Jacksonville.
Hodskins danced in front of a defender on top of the arc before driving to the hoop. He gained a step on his defender and scooped the ball into the bucket, despite being fouled. And while he would miss the subsequent free-throw, it was a moment to cherish for all parties involved.
"Really happy for Zach, a great young man, obviously overcoming an unbelievable adversity," coach Mike White said, via ESPN. "He's a very, very likable young man. You could tell by the decibel level in the O'Dome when he scored. It was a fun moment for our team and for Zach. Proud for him, happy for him."
The sophomore registered two shots in his freshman season. He missed both. Before scoring his first bucket on Tuesday, he had missed his previous three attempts on the year.
"I was excited for him," teammate Dorian Finney-Smith said, via ESPN. "I was here last year, and he never scored. I'm just happy he got it. He can shoot it, so I'm just happy he got that evil man hanging on the rim and knocking his balls out."
The bucket wasn't a fluke, either. Hodskins can really play. He's got point-guard like control, and possesses sharp vision and a smooth jumper. Check out his high-school highlights.
With the monkey now off his back, don't be surprised to see the ball start finding the nylon a little more consistently. Well played, Zach.
