WWE presents the December 28, 2015 episode of Monday Night Raw from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and the episode features the returns of both John Cena and Vince McMahon. We've got a full preview of the action for you, so let's dive into the details.
Two weeks ago, Vince McMahon gave Roman Reigns an ultimatum: He either wins the WWE World Heavyweight Championship from Sheamus, or he's fired from the company. Sure enough, Reigns managed to overcome Sheamus and The League of Nations (and delivered a Superman Punch to an interfering McMahon to boot) to become the champ.
Last week was comparatively quiet for Reigns, who had an opening segment in which he drove Stephanie McMahon insane and a closing segment in which he helped his buddy Dean Ambrose defeat Sheamus inside a steel cage (which had the added benefit of once again driving Stephanie McMahon insane).
Vince was absent last week, but WWE has advertised his return for tonight's show. It's unclear what exactly the Chairman of the Board has in store for the new champion, but it's likely Vinnie Mac will want revenge on Reigns for humiliating him on worldwide television. Could we see the boss set up a match for Reigns that is nigh impossible to win in order to take the belt off him? Or will Vince give us some direction for the Royal Rumble next month by booking a championship match for that night?
And, if we do get some clarity in the championship scene, then who is the challenger? Sheamus could get another shot, but that would feel stale at this point. Vince could pick another challenger, or he could set up a No. 1 Contender's match to let someone earn the chance.
Or, and this is perhaps the most exciting option, could Vince call upon a mercenary? Perhaps "a heartless, ruthless barbarian, mastering in cruelty and delighting in pain"? What about The Beast Incarnate, Brock Lesnar?
But Vince's isn't the only return tonight, as WWE has announced that John Cena will return after about a two-month absence tonight to face Alberto Del Rio for the WWE United States Championship. Del Rio made a surprise return at Hell in a Cell and defeated Cena in the United States Championship Open Challenge to claim the belt. We haven't seen Cena on WWE television since then, but he's back tonight to take what's his.
At some point next year (hopefully), we should see Cena vs. Reigns in a passing of the torch match. WWE has wisely voided putting these two together for the most part, outside of a few interactions in mixed tag or Fatal Four Way matches. So when they do finally clash one-on-one, it should be a significant moment.
But is there any chance Cena makes his way back into the main event scene starting tonight? We'll have to wait and see.
