Season 2 of the world's most-famous podcast, Serial, is well underway. Although the show doesn't return with more episodes until Jan. 7, creator and journalist Sarah Koenig is already teasing the rest of the season. In a new interview with Glamour, she talks future episodes, her feelings on Bowe Bergdahl and the ending for the new season.
Season 1 of the hit podcast followed the then-unknown murder case of Hae Min Lee and the man in jail for her murder, Adnan Syed. The central question of the season surrounded whether or not Syed was truly guilty of the crime.
Season 2 takes a different tactic, and is following the well-known story of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl who left his post in Afghanistan in 2009, was captured and held by the Taliban for five years, and then released to the U.S. in a highly publicized trade for five Guantanamo Bay detainees.
Bergdahl is currently being held and charged with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy for these events, which, if found guilty, could mean a life sentence for him.
Early on in the season, Koenig says she does not believe Bergdahl is guilty of sympathizing with the Taliban, telling Glamour it was an "easy" conclusion to come to. When asked if she has come to a decision on whether or not she believes Bergdahl should face any prison time or not, however, she says, "I have."
When pressed for more details, she says she cannot disclose it but did say the audience would be hearing her views on the matter, presumably at the end of the season.
So what does she most want people to get out of the rest of the season? She says, "I am hoping to speak to the people like me, and engage them carefully in what we're doing [in Afghanistan]. Who are we sending? What are they doing? What's our plan? We're going to get into all of these questions as we go forward: All of it."
Season 2 of Serial resumes Jan. 7.
