Lindsay Lohan accepted a plea deal in her trial yesterday, which allows her to go into rehab instead of going to jail. Los Angeles Superior Judge James Dabney handled her case and sentenced her to jail but decided to allow her to serve the sentence in a "lock in" rehab instead. This sentencing extends her probation to 2 years and requires her to undergo 18 months of psychotherapy. The 26-year-old actress and singer was charged with reckless driving and lying to a police officer about a car crash in June 2012 in Santa Monica, California. Her arrest violated her probation.
Judge Dabney sentenced Lohan and then added, "A suggestion -- don't drive." After explaining the terms, he also added, "This is it. You violate your probation, and we're not going to have discussions of putting you back on probation."
Lohan's lawyer, Mark Heller, said this of the trial and sentencing:
"The only issue here today is that a sweet, wonderful 26-year-old girl has finally been able to bring some closure to a chapter in her life that has been very unfortunate. Lindsay Lohan has been very fragile and very concerned by what's been happening here and the only thing I've been concerned about is that we've been able to give her story a very, very happy ending."
Maybe an even bigger story coming out of Lindsay's trial is the animosity shown by her father, Michael, towards Heller. During his statements to the press after the verdict, Heller was cut off many times by a shouting Michael Lohan.
"I want to know why are you're still up here?" Michael Lohan yelled at the lawyer. "Go home, you've done enough damage. Leave my daughter alone and stay out of the press. You're a parasite."
Lohan also said that Heller "just wants to use my daughter as way to get his name in the papers." Lindsay's father also accused Heller of tampering with a "star witness" during the case. "It is an open investigation and they just told me they are investigating him," he explained.
Unfortunately, Heller has no idea what Lohan is talking about and neither do the authorities that would be investigating him (the Los Angeles County district attorney and the Los Angeles city attorney's office). "That's a very sad and unfortunate statement," Heller stated. "Anybody is able in this great country to make any allegations that they want."
