True Detective Season 3 Casting Rumors/Spoilers: Will Nic Pizzolatto "Reinvent the Wheel?"

Though there have been casting talks, which actually turned out to be rumors, does HBO have plans underway for Season 3 of True Detective. Does creator/showrunner Nic Pizzolatto have something in mind for the crime drama that will "reinvent the wheel?"

As we previously mentioned, though the third season is up in the air, HBO has inked a deal with True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto through 2018. The first breakout season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, quickly gained critical acclaim, but the sophomore season, featuring Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams, has divided both critics and fans.

In an interview with The Frame, Lombardo reveals his thoughts on the sophomore season, "I'll tell you something. Our biggest failures - and I don't know if I would consider "True Detective 2" - but when we tell somebody to hit an air date as opposed to allowing the writing to find its own natural resting place, when it's ready, when it's baked - we've failed. And I think in this particular case, the first season of "True Detective" was something that Nic Pizzolatto had been thinking about, gestating, for a long period of time. He's a soulful writer. I think what we did was go, "Great." And I take the blame. I became too much of a network executive at that point. We had huge success. "Gee, I'd love to repeat that next year."

Lombardo adds, "Well, you know what? I set him up. To deliver, in a very short time frame, something that became very challenging to deliver. That's not what that show is. He had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. Find his muse. And so I think that's what I learned from it. Don't do that anymore."

The rumor mill ignited a spark for the third season of True Detective. We had to debunk the rumors of Jon Hamm (Mad Men) being in negotiations to star in the third season of True Detective or Fargo; a representative for the actor states, "neither is true."
