Mike Smith went 66-46 in the regular season through seven years with the Atlanta Falcons, but a 10-22 mark over the last two campaigns led the Falcons to fire Smith in a Black Monday move. Smith wasn't the best game manager despite being the winningest coach in Falcons history, according to "Sports Illustrated." But he dealt with a depleted roster the past two years, as the team didn't surround quarterback Matt Ryan with adequate talent. Who could replace Smith in Atlanta? The Falcons haven't had to make such a search in quite some time. "Sports Illustrated" reports the team has hired a search firm for help. Some candidates they could be after include New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Case. Of course, one should also keep an eye on the other coaches fired Monday — Rex Ryan and Marc Trestman — as well as former coaches turned executives or analysts, such as Mike Singeltary, John Gruden and Bill Cowher. It has been a tough season for the Carolina Panthers, but teams in the worst division of the NFL must declare a winner. On Sunday, Dec. 28, the NFC South will declare a winner between the Carolina Panthers and the Atlanta Falcons. The Panthers have had a weird season as Cam Newton missed the first game due to injures and was involved in a car wreck a couple weeks ago that resulted in Newton being hospitalized for observation and missing another game. Fans will probably be using Newton's words — "I'm on somebody's fantasy league, and I think it's the man upstairs" — during Sunday's game as they have faith in their team to pull in a victory. Johnny Manziel was sworn in as the Cleveland Browns's starting quarterback amid much fanfare and controversy. Less than two weeks later, Manziel was gone. Manziel left his second career NFL start Sunday, Dec. 21, against the Carolina Panthers with a hamstring injury and didn't return to action, as the Browns lost their fourth straight game 17-13. Manziel fell down after trying to get up from a hit by Panthers safety Colin Jones on a designed quarterback run, according to espn.com. "As I kept walking more and more, it just felt like something I hadn't experienced before," Manziel told ESPN. "I figured I needed to get checked out. Pretty frustrating." Manziel completed three of eight passes for 32 yards, a week after completing 10 of 18 passes, but throwing two interceptions in his debut. Manziel has still to throw a touchdown in 27 career passing attempts. Fans celebrated, cheering as Manziel was helped off the field by trainers, according to Fox Sports Ohio. Manziel's counterpart Sunday, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, reacted to the incident in a respectful way. Read More »

The Carolina Panthers quarterback status is currently unclear if he will play Sunday, Dec. 14, or not. Despite escaping life-threatening injuries, Newton did suffer two fractures to his lower back. The other driver didn't suffer life-threatening injuries. Panthers spokesman Charlie Dayton didn't go into detail about Newton's return to practice for the game Sunday, but he did say, "Right now we have thought about Cam's well-being and we understand there was someone else in the other car who was injured. We just hope that they're all OK." Dayton did reveal that Newton suffered from two transverse process fractures, but surgery will not be necessary.
